Energy Secretary Steven Chu to Travel to the Middle East Next Week
Visit to Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Qatar to strengthen and expand U.S. relationships across the region
WASHINGTON - Next week U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu will travel to the Middle East to meet with senior government officials, research and scientific leaders, and members of the private sector as part of the Administration's efforts to continue strengthening U.S. partnerships within the region. Secretary Chu will discuss a range of energy issues, including energy security and the importance of investing in a broad portfolio of energy technologies as part of the global economic recovery.
Secretary Chu will visit Riyadh and Jeddah, Saudia Arabia; Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates; and Doha, Qatar.
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
On Monday, February 22, Secretary Chu will meet with Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Ali al Naimi and other government leaders. He will also visit the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) to discuss the latest in energy technology research and development. Secretary Chu will also deliver remarks at the International Energy Forum Secretariat while in Riyadh.
Jeddah, Saudia Arabia
Secretary Chu will tour the King Abdullah University for Science and Technology (KAUST) Tuesday, February 23, where he will meet with the University's leadership.
Abu Dhabi, UAE
On Wednesday, February 24, Secretary Chu will meet with UAE Minister of Energy Mohammed al Hamli and other government leaders. He will also tour Masdar City, the world's first carbon-neutral zero waste city, before delivering a speech to students and faculty from the Masdar Institute for Science and Technology (MIST).
Doha, Qatar
On his final day of the trip, Thursday, February 25, Secretary Chu meet with Abdullah al-Attiyah, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy and Industy, as well as other government leaders. He will also visit the Qatar Science and Technology Park and Education City, a project of the Qatar Foundation that houses educational and research facilities for school age to university level students. Secretary Chu will address students, faculty and staff at Education City.
