Hoyer Statement on Trump Withdrawing the US from the World Health Organization

WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on President Trump’s announcement that he is withdrawing the United States from the World Health Organization:

"Today's decision by President Trump is, like most of his decisions, short-sighted, ill-advised, and wrong. This decision will put millions of lives at risk.

"If we have learned anything from this global pandemic, it is that public health is not confined by borders or oceans. A public health crisis in one nation will impact other nations. When it comes to public health, we are truly in this together. Leaving the World Health Organization will damage our nation, our nation's standing as the world's leader, and our relationship with our allies.

"While I would support structural changes at the World Health Organization to ensure that it is not used by China and other nations to spread misinformation, I strongly oppose the decision to withdraw the United States' membership."
