Hoyer Statement on the Passing of Congressman John D. Dingell Jr.

WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement this evening on the passing of the longest serving Member of Congress, Representative John D. Dingell Jr. of Michigan:

“John Dingell was my friend.  He was a man of indefatigable spirit who loved life, the lovely Deborah his wife, and the House of Representatives.

“With his passing, our nation loses a giant whose vision helped improve the lives of hundreds of millions of Americans over the course of his career.

“In his nearly six decades of service in the House, John formed a living link between the Democrats who enacted the New Deal and Great Society programs and those working to build on them with a twenty-first century agenda for opportunity, justice, and economic security.

“Thanks to John Dingell’s leadership and support, Medicare protects seniors’ access to quality health care.  Thanks to John Dingell, Democrats embraced a platform of civil rights in the 1960’s, and thanks to his environmental leadership we have the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, and Endangered Species Act.  Thanks to John Dingell, America’s auto industry and the millions employed by that industry continue to lead the world.

“Americans will long remember John for his humor, his wit, his keen intellect, his fearlessness, and his searing questioning of those he believed were jeopardizing the safety, health, and welfare of our people.  None of us who were close to him will ever forget John’s positive attitude, his humor, his pride in both his Polish roots and his service in the U.S. Armed Forces during World War II, his love of America, and his abiding belief in working across the aisle to achieve results through consensus.

“As we mourn his passing and celebrate his extraordinary life, I join in offering my condolences to his beloved wife Rep. Debbie Dingell, the entire Dingell family, and the Michigan communities that John so dutifully served throughout his tenure in the House.

“May his memory inspire us all to meet every challenge with optimism and determination, every adversary with both resolve and an open mind, and every friend with an open heart – as he did throughout his life.”
