DOE Joins Congressional Delegation During Visit to Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Three Department of Energy (DOE) officials joined a congressional delegation that traveled to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands to assess damages and discuss ongoing recovery efforts on the islands in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. DOE’s Under Secretary for Energy, Mark Menezes, Assistant Secretary for the Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability, Bruce Walker, and Deputy Assistant Secretary for Infrastructure Security and Energy Restoration, Devon Streit, were the three Department leaders dispatched to oversee and assist with recovery and power restoration efforts.

“Seeing first-hand the impacts and devastation Hurricane Maria caused was truly an eye-opening and heartbreaking experience,” said Under Secretary Menezes. “But the people of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands are strong, and together we will restore and rebuild their home. The Department of Energy is deeply committed to working with our government and industry partners in order to restore energy and power back to our fellow Americans.”

Menezes and Streit arrived on the islands last Sunday, and Walker had been in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands overseeing and working on recovery efforts since October 21, 2017. While down there, they met with local leaders and worked with our U.S. Army Corps-led government partners to conceptualize the most effective and efficient restoration efforts.

The congressional delegation DOE participated in was led by U.S. Senator and Chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, Lisa Murkowski, R-AK. Joining Murkowski on the CODEL were Sens. Bill Cassidy, R-LA., Al Franken, D-MN, Tom Carper, D-DE, and Kamala Harris, D-CA, and Reps. Bill Shuster, R-PA, Garrett Graves, R-LA, and Peter DeFazio, D-OR.
