U.S. and South Africa Hold Bilateral Discussion on Building a More Sustainable Energy Future

Pretoria — U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy Daniel Poneman and South African Minister of Energy Ben Martins met yesterday in Pretoria to follow up on the U.S.-South Africa Bilateral Energy Dialogue held last December in Washington, DC. They discussed continued bilateral cooperation on a wide range of energy issues, including collaboration to diversify U.S. and South African energy portfolios and provide reliable and affordable electricity to homes and businesses.

“Through our strong energy partnership, the United States and South Africa are working to deliver concrete results that grow our economies through sustainable energy development and enhance our energy security,” said U.S. Deputy Secretary Poneman.

In Pretoria, Deputy Secretary Poneman also spoke at the Nuclear Africa Conference, where he highlighted the United States’ and South Africa’s shared commitment to the safe and responsible development of civil nuclear power. During the visit, Deputy Secretary Poneman also met with industry leaders from South Africa’s power and nuclear energy sectors.

Earlier in the week, Deputy Secretary Poneman delivered keynote remarks at the POWER GEN Africa 2014 conference in Cape Town. During the remarks, Deputy Secretary Poneman discussed the role of government and industry partnerships to catalyze concrete actions that build a more prosperous and sustainable energy future.

He invited government, civil society and private industry leaders to the upcoming U.S.-Africa Energy Ministerial, which will showcase African leadership in energy development and highlight ways in which private investment can expand access to electricity, develop new sources of affordable and cleaner energy, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The U.S.-Africa Energy Ministerial will be co-chaired by U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz and Ethiopian Minister of Energy and Water Alemayehu Tegenu and will be held in Addis Ababa this June. The Ministerial supports President Obama’s Power Africa initiative to double access to power in Sub-Saharan Africa as well as the President’s Climate Action Plan, which calls for international cooperation to address the threats of a changing climate.
