Dover’s teacher’s union endorsed candidates for the first time ever Friday.

“We are very proud to make our first ever endorsement of a candidate for municipal office in the Town of Dover,” Dover Education Association President Jon Coniglio said. “After a very highly organized vetting process where we scrutinized written submissions and held face-to-face interviews, we believe Carolyn Blackman and her team have the values, philosophies, and policies that matter most to NJEA members, our students, and their families.”

Alderwoman Carolyn Blackman won the Democratic nod for mayor in June. Incumbent Mayor James Dodd, who has held the position since 2003, is seeking re-election as an independent.

Dodd had received support form other unions in previous elections.

The incumbent mayor lost support of the county party because the town’s majority-white Board of Alderman did not reflect the town, which is 69% Hispanic. Some Democrats credit his falling out of favor to his endorsement of Gov. Chris Christie in 2013.

“Carolyn Blackman and her team understand the importance of education, the responsibilities of the school in the community, the critical role of educators in the growth and development of young people and are ready to vigorously represent Dover’s parents and children,” Coniglio said.
