The Edinburgh-born actress wife of US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has been met with ridicule on social media after posting a "creepy" picture on Instagram to mark Independence Day.

Louise Linton shared a series of poolside photos to mark Independence Day, with the message "a beautiful day to celebrate".

But the sentiment wasn't shared by many on social media, and her post faced a backlash from critics who dubbed it: "red, blue and a whole lot of whiteness".

After New York magazine reporter Yashar Ali reposted the image on Twitter, it was criticised by some as an ostentatious display of wealth, and classless.

Other social media users dubbed it 'creepy' and one Instagram user explained: "They're watching the servants throw Central American toddlers into the deep end."

It isn't the first time the Scottish former actress has been criticised for 'tone-deaf' social media posts. In August 2017, she hit back, stung by online attacks over another Instagram post flaunting her designer label outfits.

In response to a critic who posted: "Glad we could pay for your little getaway. #deplorable", Linton described the commenter as "adorably out of touch".

The original post has now been deleted. Later the same year,  Linton and Mnuchin were ridiculed over a picture showing them holding up newly minted cash at the Bureau of Printing and Engraving's Washington printing plant with commenters claiming they looked like James Bond villains.
