BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) - The former president of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe has agreed to plead guilty to defrauding the federal government by requesting reimbursement for travel expenses from both the tribe and the federal government.
The Billings Gazette reports Lawrence “Jace” Killsback signed the plea agreement last week and he is asking for a plea hearing in July.
Prosecutors also allege that between 2014 and 2017 Killsback provided fraudulent invoices for official travel that did not occur.
Killsback was the health director of the southeastern Montana tribe from 2014 through 2016 and became president in November 2016. The tribal council voted him out of office in October 2017. He narrowly won a special election in January 2018 and ultimately resigned in October 2018.
Court records do not say how much restitution Killsback might be required to pay.
