More than a dozen students have the mumps at the University of Florida, officials said. “We've had 17 reports of mumps among students as of today. Normally we have no more than one or two cases per year,” a University of Florida spokesman said Friday. Mumps is a viral infection that involves swelled glands. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is the best way for people to protect themselves against it.The school said it was communicating with students via email and social media about what they should be doing. “Follow the types of procedures you would during flu seasons: avoid sharing things like water bottles, cups and eating utensils (anything that would come into contact with saliva), wash hands and use hand sanitizer, and cover your mouth when coughing and sneezing,” the school said.
