GOP launches move to recall Addiego

Republicans need 40k signatures to force recall election

The New Jersey Republican State Committee is recruiting supporters to help recall State Sen. Dawn Addiego (D-Evesham) from her 8th district seat.

Addiego announced yesterday that she was switching parties.

To force a recall election, Republicans would need 40,021 registered voters in the district to sign a recall petition.  That’s 25% of the total number of registered voters, according to the most recent numbers provided by the state Division of Elections.

If that happens, a recall election would be held simultaneously with a special election to fill the remainder of Addiego’s term.

Addiego could run to keep her seat in that election.

In 1993, West New York voters recalled Mayor Anthony DeFino, but then voted to keep him in office.

While the New Jersey Constitution provides a vehicle by which voters can recall their legislators, the option is rarely successful.  While recalls have worked at the municipal level, no sitting legislator has ever faced a recall election since the current constitution was adopted in 1947.

Still, the state GOP can use the recall threat as a vehicle to enhance their e-mail database and can raise money off Addiego becoming a Democrat.

  1. Hell hath no fury like Republicans scorned. Even if they’re driving country off a cliff like Thelma and Louise as everyone else dives out of the way.
