Ohio senator says farm bill couldn’t have come at a better time for farmers

The House and Senate have passed the 2018 Farm Bill and Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown says it couldn’t have come at a better time for farmers.

“The last time we wrote the farm bill commodity prices were, if not soaring, were high and now it’s a different time,” he says. “That’s why we modernize this bill and update it every five years.”

He tells Brownfield he was pleased to see the revisions to the Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) and Price Loss Coverage (PLC) programs.

“We updated that so farmers can apply for it and have that safety net when prices are low or when weather conditions are not optimal for farmers,” he says.

Brown says he thinks President Trump will sign the bill into law soon.

“He sees this vote coming out of the House and Senate and I think he’ll sign it,” he says.

Brown is the first Ohioan to serve on the Senate Ag Committee in more than 40 years.

He says the farm bill is good for Ohio farmers. The final bill will create a new Clean Lakes, Estuaries, and Rivers (CLEAR) program to better promote water quality. He says the bill will help prevent algae blooms and help farmers participating in conservation programs.
