Karl Rove admits the GOP is toast as long as Trump is president: 'We're screwed for now'

Karl Rove, the former political strategist for President George W. Bush, told a group of conservatives this week that Republican Party is likely to lose control of the House of Representatives, and that Republicans would not be able to make any further gains as long as President Donald Trump is in office.

The Austin American Statesman reports that Rove said American politics had entered a phase of madness led by Trump that makes it nearly impossible to imagine anything constructive happening in Washington.

"We’re screwed for now," he said. "Things are really messed up. They’re not going to get better until we change the cast of characters."

Rove went on to explain that, in a normal presidency, the party in power would be focused like a laser on the strong economy and record low unemployment.

Instead, he said, "we wake up at 5:30 in the morning to read the latest tweet on the president’s attitude toward Meryl Streep’s acting abilities."

Rove said, however, that it's possible a Democratic takeover of the House will make Trump not want to run for a second term, given that Democrats are expected to launch multiple investigations into his personal finances, his business dealings, and his administration's numerous scandals.

"Maybe after a year or two of fun and games with the House Oversight Committee he’ll decide to go off and do something else," Rove explained.
