The Charleston Police Department says it's working on a plan to reduce traffic fatalities involving an impaired person.

Chief Luther Reynolds say state wide about 30-percent of traffic fatalities include an impaired person.

But in Charleston that number is higher.

Reynolds says over a nine year period, almost 70 percent of traffic fatalities involved an impaired person.

The Chief says in 2016 that number hit a high of 84 percent.

“Fast-forward to all the deaths that we have had and the percentage that are related to impaired driving, we are going to do more about that. We ‘re focusing more resources on traffic specifically, more with education, and enforcement,” says Reynolds.

Reynolds says he hopes to work with other law enforcement agencies and the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) group to bring those numbers down.
