Former director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mohamed ElBaradei, questioned whether Jordan is being penalized for refusing the US’ “deal of the century”.

“Is it true that Jordan is being punished for refusing to liquidate the Palestinian cause?” ElBaradei asked on Twitter.

Israeli Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper revealed that Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Israel and the United States have played a role in escalating protests currently taking place in the Kingdom.

According to the paper, “two things have happened in Jordan in recent days, the first was exempting Amman from an agreement between the United States, Israel, Saudi Arabia and Egypt on transferring the US embassy to Jerusalem, and the second is the protests in major cities against increasing oil and electricity prices and the new income tax project.

The paper explained that “on the surface there is no link between the two issues” because transferring the embassy is political, and the Jordanians’ demands are economic” however, the paper claimed the link is that “Jordan, which acts as a rich country, has been practically living on foreign aid and assistance for many years”.
