PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Heads up if your weekend journey takes you across the Columbia River. The Northbound lanes of Interstate 5 across the Intestate Bridge will be closed late Saturday night and remain closed until Sunday morning.

The Oregon Department of Transportation says traffic will be stopped starting at 11 p.m. Saturday night and will be allowed to resume at 7 a.m. Sunday morning.

While the bridge is closed, ODOT says an inspection team will be looking at the critical steel structure to make sure it remains sound. It is part of an inspection that is required every two years. Crews will also be installing a new sign bracket and traffic control lights in the Northbound Lanes.

The closure will affect the northbound sidewalk and the Jantzen Beach on-ramp to Northbound I5 as well. The entire south span of the bridge will remain open.

ODOT is encouraging Washington-bound traffic should take Interstate 84 east to Interstate 205 north across the Glenn Jackson Bridge.
