SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WDTN) — Hayward Middle School’s drone soccer team hosted the state’s first drone soccer match late last year. Now they will represent Ohio on the national stage.

Hayward’s drone soccer team is headed to Virginia for the 2024 U.S. Drone Soccer National Championships.

After a successful run through Regionals, the team is the first of its kind to represent Ohio on a national level.

The championship competition begins on April 27 and will see the Springfield middle school face off against 15 middle and high school teams from around the country, as well as an international team from Turkey.

The relatively new sport sees teams of 5 building, operating and repairing drones in a high-speed environment.

The goal of the game is for the striker of each team to score as many points as possible. Each match comprises of three sets of play, and teams consist of a striker, a goalie, a defender and two forwards.
