Academy’s New 2022 Invites Push Members Pass 10,000 Mark
Every summer, when the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invites new members, publicists scramble to update their lists. In the past seven years since #OscarsSoWhite, the Academy membership ranks have burgeoned dramatically, adding more young, diverse, and international members. As the Academy has sought to meet its diversity goals, the organization has swelled its ranks since 2015 from 6,446 to 10,665 total members (including Emeritus), if all the 2022 invitees accept membership, and the number of voting members to 9,665.
In the past two years, though, the pace has slowed, since the Academy met its goal of doubling the number of women and people of color in its membership. Instead of 819 new invites going out in 2020, the 2022 invites are just 397, a sign that the Academy is continuing to pull back on its 10 percent growth rate surge, and that the number of qualified experienced industry professionals has limits.
Next up is the controversial Aperture 2025, which uses Oscar eligibility as a wedge to encourage Hollywood producers and executives to follow inclusion standards set by the Academy, or risk not being Oscar eligible. While the 2022 and 2023 Oscars required filling out a submission form; the 96th Oscars will be the first to enforce that eligibility.
Diversity and inclusion continue to be the order of the day. The 2022 class is 44 percent women, 37 percent belong to underrepresented ethnic/racial communities, and 50 percent are from 53 countries and territories outside the United States. Seven branches invited more women than men, three branches invited the majority of their candidates from underrepresented ethnic/racial communities, and nine branches invited the majority of their candidates from outside the United States.
The changing demographics of the Academy voters have led to nominations in recent years that reflect the diverse global film community, from Best Picture nominations for “Drive My Car,” whose writer-director Ryusuke Hamaguchi and lead actor Hidetoshi Nishijima are among new member invitees, to three nominations for the documentary “Flee,” whose director Jonas Poher Rasmussen is also invited.
As always, Oscar nominees (71) dominate the invite list, including 15 winners, from Ariana DeBose and Troy Kotsur to Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell. And per usual, four writer-directors get to choose between branches, including “Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom” nominee Pawo Choyning Dorji and “CODA” winner Sian Heder. Those who accept the invitations will be the only additions to the Academy’s membership in 2022.
For the first time last year, the Academy allowed agents who are members-at-large to vote. The 95th Academy Awards will take place on March 12, 2023, live again from the Dolby Theatre. And in May, the Board of Governors approved amendments to the Oscars: the eligibility period for Academy Awards consideration will return to the full calendar year: a feature film must have a qualifying theatrical release date between January 1, 2022, and December 31, 2022.
Going forward, new Academy CEO Bill Kramer, who moves over from leading the Academy Museum to replace exiting Dawn Hudson after 11 years on July 18, and his new Board of Governors face a number of thorny issues. They include replacing president David Rubin, who has termed out (producer Janet Yang is gaining momentum heading into the first new Board vote in August); reforming the unwieldy 54-member board representing 17 branches of the Academy; and redefining the Academy’s Oscar mission going into the future. Will the Oscars continue to focus on theatrical movies alone? Will the annual Oscar show continue to be broadcast on ABC? While ratings were up (after the lower-than-low pandemic Oscars) under producer Will Packer, the 94th Oscars were mired in the wrong kind of controversy, from the Will Smith slap to how the Academy handled its aftermath. Kramer has his work cut out for him.
So far, with the pandemic in retreat, the Board has returned to the old theatrical norms, voting in May that the Academy Screening Room, while it will continue to provide online viewing, will no longer be a method of qualification, as theaters have reopened; the six qualifying U.S. metropolitan areas continue to be Los Angeles County; the City of New York; the Bay Area; Chicago, Illinois; Miami, Florida; and Atlanta, Georgia.
