Vermont Gov. Scott named to President Biden's council of governors
Vermont Gov. Phil Scott is set to become a member of President Joe Biden's council of governors. Members of the White House confirmed Thursday the president will appoint a bipartisan group of nine governors, including seven new members, to the council. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, a Republican, and Minnesota Gov. Tim Waltz, a Democrat, will rejoin the group and serve as co-chairs.The council was first created under President Obama in 2010 by executive order in an effort to promote collaboration between state leadership and the federal government on issues of national security. Members of the Coast Guard and National Guard, among others, are also included in the group. "The Council of Governors will closely coordinate with the Biden-Harris administration to bolster preparedness, resilience and response on behalf of all Americans in times of need," a news release from the White House said. All governors appointed to the council will serve a two-year term. Scott marks the first Vermont governor to hold a position on the council since Republican Jim Douglas was appointed shortly after the council's creation in 2010, less than a year before he would ultimately leave office. “As a public servant, I have always prioritized good government over party politics, and this is the perspective I will bring to this appointment," Scott wrote in a statement. "It is truly an honor to serve on the council."He continued, “I want to thank President Biden for appointing me, and I look forward to working with his Administration and the other governors to demonstrate that bipartisan leadership can work and help bring our deeply polarized country together to unite around our shared values and goals.”A complete list of council members as announced by the White House includes:• Minnesota Gov. Tim Waltz (D) • Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R)• Delaware Gov. John Carney (D)• Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards (D)• Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D)• Oregon Gov. Kate Brown (D)• Utah Gov.
