Second suspect in Weitchpec shooting over the weekend now in custody

HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM) — Two men are in the Humboldt County Jail after a shooting incident over the weekend near Weitchpec.

Deputies with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office arrested 51-year-old, Frederick William Lewis, after being located by tribal police at a business in Hoopa. He’s been charged with assault with a firearm. Then 31-year-old, Derrick Anthony Lewis turned himself in to authorities Tuesday afternoon. He’s now facing a charge of attempted murder.

“Derrick Lewis, the second suspect, actually turned himself in to the Sheriff’s Office. So, he’s currently undergoing interviewing with our deputies right now,” according to public information specialist Samantha Karges.

Both men are accused of shooting a 32-year-old relative during a confrontation near Upper Cappell Road on Saturday. The victim was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
