Here's a look at how key battleground states in 2020 election have voted in the past
As Election Day approaches, all eyes are on the swing states and the Electoral College votes they hold in the United States winner take all voting system. If the last few elections taught us anything, it's a history lesson and how crucial these states can be in picking our president. In orderto win in 2020 President Donald Trump or former Vice President Joe Biden need to claim at least 270 electoral votes. This road 2 to 70 is even more challenging because the ongoing pandemic has made voting confusing for Americans and campaigning difficult for the candidates. Additional obstacles, like long early voting lines and few ballot boxes, may also prove to impact the number of voters in key counties. So let's take a closer look at the swing states with the highest number of electoral votes and which way they've swung in the past. Ever since Florida's high profile recount of the Bush versus Gore election in 2000, Florida has developed a reputation for being a controversial swing state. With the exception of 1992 Florida has voted for the winner of the presidential election from 1964 to 2016 the state's electoral votes went to Donald Trump in 2016. After going to Barack Obama in both 2012 and 2000 and eight, George W. Bush won Florida in 2004. We're going to win this state. We're going to win four more years in the White House. We're going to make our country greater than it has ever been. This the most important election in our lifetimes. You could make all the difference here in Florida. You can determine the outcome. This election, a true swing state. Both 2020 candidates have made several visits to Florida. In a final push for votes, Pennsylvania proved to be a dagger to Dems in 2016 when the state's electoral votes went to Trump voting blue. Since 1992 it flipped. Read that election cycle. Overall, Pennsylvania has voted for the presidential winner in 46 elections this year. Pennsylvania, a state with ties to Biden, will be one to watch. Next up. Ohio, the constant swing states electoral votes went to Trump in 2016. Obama won Ohio in both 2012 and 2008. Bush took the state in 2004 and 2000 Since 1964 no candidate has ever won the presidency without winning Ohio. Just next door is Michigan. The state's electoral votes went to Trump in 2016 but from 2000 to 2012 voted for the Democratic presidential nominee, similar to Wisconsin. It had previously been a Democratic stranglehold. Since its admission to the union in 18 37 Michigan has participated in 46 presidential elections and supported the winning candidate 33 times. North Carolina is a state that typically votes read but has gone for Democratic candidates in the past. The state's electoral votes went to Trump in 2016 Romney in 2012 Obama in 2000 and eight and Bush in 2004 and 2000. In fact, since 19 sixties, North Carolina has only voted for the Democratic presidential candidate four times.

But recently, Arizona has been showing signs of becoming a perennial swing state. In 2018, the state voted for Democratic candidate Kyrsten Sinema to claim the Senate seat recently belonging to Republican Sen. Jeff Flake.

The state has another Senate seat up for grabs in this election and polling indicates Arizona could have two Democratic senators. As a result, Democrats believe former vice president Joe Biden has a shot to flip the state blue in the presidential race.

Colorado Election Results 2000 - 2016

Colorado has voted for the Democratic nominee since 2008 and as of late has become a state that leans in favor of Democrats. Prior to 2008, Colorado was a Republican stronghold in presidential elections dating back to 1952, with a few anomalies.

The state voted for Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964, and Bill Clinton in 1992.

Similar to Arizona, there is also a Senate race on the ballot in Colorado, and polling indicates Sen. Cory Gardner is trailing Democratic nominee John Hickenlooper, who dropped out of the Democratic presidential campaign to focus his attention on challenging Gardner.

Florida Election Results 2000 - 2016

Florida is one of the nation’s most pivotal swing states, carrying 29 electoral votes. It is tied for the state with the third most electoral votes in the United States and is the largest state that regularly flips between parties.

Over the past five presidential elections, the state has been carried three times by Republicans and twice by Democrats.

In the 2016 election, Donald Trump defeated Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in the state by nearly 113,000 votes on his way to the White House. Libertarian Candidate Gary Johnson received more than 207,000 votes and Green Party candidate Jill Stein topped 64,000 votes.

Georgia Election Results 2000 - 2016

Georgia is one of several swing states this election year, carrying 16 electoral votes.

Historically, the Peach State has voted Republican in presidential elections, which bodes well for the incumbent, President Donald Trump. But following a closely contested gubernatorial race in 2018, Democrats believe the state could flip in favor of former vice president Joe Biden in 2020.

Over the past five presidential elections, the state has been carried by Republicans in each election year.

In 2016, Trump defeated Hillary Clinton by over 211,000 votes, but the total vote percentage Trump received was the lowest among Republican presidential candidates over the last five elections.

Michigan Election Results 2000 - 2016

Michigan enters the spotlight in the 2020 presidential race after being one of the states that tipped the 2016 election in favor of Trump with its 16 electoral votes.

In the past five presidential elections, the state has been carried four times by Democrats and once by Republicans.

Up until 2016, Michigan was part of what is colloquially known as "The Blue Wall" of states that historically voted in favor of Democrats in a presidential election.

Trump was able to flip Michigan in his favor by about 10,700 votes over Clinton in 2016.

North Carolina Election Results 2000 - 2016

North Carolina is one of the nation’s perennial swing states, carrying 15 electoral votes. Over the past five presidential elections, the state has been carried four times by Republicans and once by Democrats.

In 2016, Trump won by about 173,000 votes over Clinton.

Ohio Election Results 2000 - 2016

Ohio is one of the nation’s most pivotal swing states, carrying 18 electoral votes. Since 1944, only one presidential candidate has failed to carry Ohio and gone on to win the presidency – John F. Kennedy in 1960.

Over the past five presidential elections, the state has been carried three times by Republicans and twice by the Democrats.

Trump scored a big win in the state with 2.84 million votes in 2016, topping Clinton by more than 446,000 votes.

Pennsylvania Election Results 2000 - 2016

The reliably blue state in a presidential election was one of many flipped by President Donald Trump in his 2016 win. The state’s 20 electoral votes could be pivotal in the 2020 race.

Over the past five presidential elections, the state has been carried four times by Democrats and once by the GOP.

After six straight presidential elections of voting for the Democratic candidate, Trump won Pennsylvania by roughly 44,000 votes, which was the smallest margin in the five elections mapped below.

Texas Election Results 2000 - 2016

With the second most electoral votes in the country, Texas' 38 electoral votes have been a stronghold for Republicans over the years.

But changing demographics and a closely contested Senate race in 2018 between Republican Sen. Ted Cruz and Democratic candidate Beto O'Rourke has caused Texas to be labeled as a battleground state in this year's election.

Trump and Biden have been neck and neck in the polls, with Trump holding a slight lead over Biden.

The last time Texas backed the Democratic candidate in a presidential race was back in 1976 when Texas voted for Jimmy Carter.

Wisconsin Election Results 2000 - 2016

Wisconsin enters the spotlight in the 2020 presidential race after being one of the states that tipped the 2016 election in favor of Trump.

Over the past five presidential elections, the state has been carried four times by Democrats and once by Republicans. Wisconsin holds 10 electoral votes.

Up until 2016, Wisconsin was part of what is colloquially known as "The Blue Wall" of states that historically voted in favor of Democrats in a presidential election. Pundits assumed Wisconsin wouldn't waver in their commitment to the Democratic Party and predicted Clinton would claim victory in the state.

But election night proved to show otherwise, with Trump narrowly defeating Clinton by about 13,000 votes.
