On Steven Gerrard's 40th birthday, Mirror Sport has looked back at the 10 greatest moments of his career.

The Liverpool icon joined the club's academy in 1989, aged nine, and stayed at Anfield through thick and thin before leaving in 2015.

Gerrard won seven major honours with the Reds as well as numerous individual accolades, finishing third in the 2005 Ballon d'Or and being named in the UEFA Team of the Century.

Captaining club and country for many years, he is considered one of the greatest English players of a generation.

Without further ado, here is our list of Gerrard's greatest moments with Liverpool and the Three Lions.

10. Named England captain (2012)

Roy Hodgson named Gerrard as permanent England captain ahead of Euro 2012, taking over from John Terry and Rio Ferdinand.

He went on to win two man of the match awards and assist three times as England topped their group of France, Ukraine and Sweden.

Despite losing on penalties to Italy in the quarter-finals, Gerrard was named in the UEFA Team of the Tournament.

9. Appointed Liverpool captain (2003)

After a year developing his leadership ability as vice-captain to Sami Hyppia, Gerrard was named Liverpool skipper by Gerard Houllier in October 2003.

Gerrard went on to captain Liverpool a club record 473 times before leaving for LA Galaxy, earning the nickname 'Captain Fantastic'.

8. Long-range strike versus Manchester United (2001)

2001 was a stellar year for Gerrard in which he won the FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League and was named PFA Young Player of the Year.

Arguably his brightest moment of individual brilliance - at club level at least - came against Manchester United when he fired a thunderous long-range strike past Fabien Barthez.

Alongside United greats George Wall and Sandy Turnbull, Gerrard's nine goals in North-West derbies make him the joint-top scorer in the fixture's history.

7. Europa League final goal (2001)

Gerrard developed his habit of scoring goals in finals with a lashed strike to put the Reds 2-0 up against Alaves in the Europa League final in 2001.

The Spanish club hit back during a dramatic match to take the game to extra-time, with Liverpool emerging as 5-4 victors.

To this day, Gerrard is the only player to score in the finals of the Champions League, Europa League, FA Cup and League Cup.

6. Camera kiss at Old Trafford (2009)

During the heat of a title race with Manchester United in the 2008/09 season, Gerrard scored from the penalty spot during Liverpool's 4-1 win at Old Trafford.

What followed was one of the Premier League's most iconic celebrations, with the Reds captain kissing the badge before smooching a pitch-side camera.

He went on to repeat the celebration during a 3-0 win at United in the 2013/14 campaign, though - like in 2009 - Liverpool were edged to the title once more.

5. Merseyside derby hat-trick (2012)

Gerrard scored the first Merseyside derby hat-trick in 30 years during a 3-0 win over Everton in March 2012.

His heroics against the Toffees were a bright spark in an otherwise mixed season in which Liverpool lifted the League Cup but limped to eighth place in the Premier League - their worst finish of the 21 century.

4. Stunning first England goal (2001)

Gerrard's first goal for England was the icing on the cake during one of the Three Lions' most fondly-remembered games: the 5-1 win over Germany.

The young midfielder latched on to Rio Ferdinand's backwards header with a chest and a rifled half-volley into the bottom corner to put England 2-1 up.

Gerrard went on to score 20 more goals for England and pick up 114 caps to become the Three Lions' fourth most capped player.

3. Olympiacos 'what a hit son' (2004)

A goal remembered partly for Andy Gray's iconic commentary, Gerrard labelled his 25-yard half-volley against Olympiacos in the Champions League his most important goal yet.

The goal secured Liverpool's qualification to the Champions League knock-out stages, where they advanced all the way to play AC Milan in the final in Istanbul...

2. FA Cup final heroics (2006)

One of the all-time great FA Cup performances, Gerrard played through cramp to break West Ham United hearts in the 2006 FA Cup final.

His 35-yard thunderbolt levelled the scores at 3-3 in injury time to snatch the trophy from the Hammers' grasp.

The Reds captain scored twice, assisted the other goal and converted his penalty in the shoot-out to lift the trophy with a man-of-the-match performance.

1. Istanbul miracle (2005)

Undisputedly his finest hour in Liverpool red, Gerrard led the greatest comeback in Champions League history in the final against a world-class AC Milan team.

With the Reds written off at half-time and facing a 3-0 deficit, Gerrard scored the goal that inspired Liverpool's recovery and won the penalty from which they equalised.

He was handed the man of the match award after Liverpool triumphed on penalties and was later named UEFA Club Footballer of the Year.
