His son Beau, who was an Iraq Veteran, former attorney general of Delaware and a rising political star, died of brain cancer in 2015 when he was just 46.

'Every morning I get up... I think to myself is he proud of me. He's the one who wanted me to stay engaged, made me promise...,' Biden said.

'That didn't mean I had to run for president but he was worried I would walk away from what I had worked on my whole life since I was 24 years old.'

Asked about whether he could still feel his late son with him on the campaign trail, Biden said: 'He is part of me and so is my surviving son, Hunter, and (daughter) Ashley.

'He walks with me. I know that sounds to some people as kind of silly, but he really honest to God does. I know he's in me. I know he's part of me.'

Biden, who also lost his first wife and infant daughter in a car crash back in 1972, said voters regularly ask him for advice on coping with grief.

'You'd be amazed at the number of people who come up to me. I mean hundreds of people over time,' he said.

'They'll throw their arms around me, men and women, and say, 'I just lost my son, I just lost my father, I just lost my wife'. All they want to know is that you can make it.

'The way you make it is you find purpose and you realize they are inside you.'

'It's impossible to separate it and that's the really good thing.'
