The following police logs are from the University of Massachusetts Police Department from Friday, Dec. 6, 2019 to Sunday, Dec. 8, 2019.

Friday, Dec. 6, 2019

Lost/Found Property 

11:16 a.m.: A reporting party stated they found an ID at the Engineering and Computer Science Building on Governors Drive. The ID was brought to the UMPD station.

12:53 p.m.: A lost EpiPen was found at Thompson Hall on Hicks Way. It was brought to the UMPD station.

12:58 p.m.: A “gold” colored ring was found at Morrill Science Center II Central on North Pleasant Street. It was brought to the UMPD station.

8:48 p.m.: A framed artwork found leaning up against someone’s car was brought to the UMPD station. A certificate of authenticity was attached to the back of the artwork.

Traffic Enforcement

11:41 a.m.: Traffic enforcement was conducted at University Drive and Southwest Circle.

1:33 p.m.: Traffic enforcement was conducted on Commonwealth Avenue.

4:18 p.m.: Traffic enforcement was conducted on Commonwealth Avenue.

8:25 p.m.: Traffic enforcement was conducted at the Totman Physical Education Building on Eastman Lane.

9:50 p.m.: Traffic enforcement was conducted on Governors Drive.

Alarm-Fire

 11:58 a.m.: A reporting party called and stated there was a fire alarm that went off at Fernald Hall on Stockbridge Road. Everyone in the building went outside. Nothing was showing on the Simplex panel. Emergency Health Services and Amherst Fire Department was notified and en route. Nothing was showing, but one of the occupants reported the smell of smoke. The alarm was referred to techs.

2:29 p.m.: EHS and AFD were notified of an accidental or defective fire alarm that went off at Stockbridge Road. Nothing was showing, and people were evacuated out of the building. AFD came on the scene.

Alarm-Fire Trouble

12:50 p.m.: Fire Engine 1 was notified of an accidental or defective fire alarm that went off at North Residential Area Building D on Eastman Lane. F1 advised it was a battery problem, and Simplex was notified.

4:55 p.m.: F1 was notified of an accidental or defective alarm that went off at the Recreation Center on Commonwealth Avenue. F1 reset the alarm.

Parking Complaint 

1:04 p.m.: A vehicle parked on Campus Center Way was blocked by construction equipment as well as vehicles in the area. The problem was resolved.

9:35 p.m.: A reporting party stated there were no spots available in Lot 50 on Hampshire Dining Commons Road. A tow was requested and cancelled after the operator came out. A space became available.

Assist Citizen

1:11 p.m.: A party walked into the lobby of the UMPD station with a question about driving.

7:03 p.m.: A party was assisted to his dorm to collect his belongings. The party left campus with his parents.

8:32 p.m.: A reporting party stated he was not able to locate his vehicle. The vehicle was parked in Lot 32E on Massachusetts Avenue at 1:30 p.m., and he went to his vehicle approximately 20 minutes ago and could not locate it. Ernie’s Towing was contacted, and the reporting party’s vehicle was not found in the computer system. The party was able to locate the vehicle.

Assist Agency

1:52 p.m.: A party from Ernie’s Towing was requesting info on a listed vehicle.

5:01 p.m.: Officers were present on Massachusetts Avenue for the lighting of the Merry Maple and the Amherst Christmas Parade. Massachusetts Avenue from the Haigis Mall to North Pleasant Street was closed for ten minutes after 5:02 p.m.

5:22 p.m.: Officers were present for the UMass hockey game vs. the University of Maine.

10:37 p.m.: The physical plant was contacted for cone placement on the south side of Clark Hill Road where the crosswalk meets the sidewalk by Gorman Hall. There was a missing water valve in the roadway that left a fairly good size gap.

Accident-Property Damage

 4:41 p.m.: A two-vehicle accident occurred outside Goodell Library on Hicks Way. There were no injuries. Paperwork was exchanged between the two operators.

Alarm-Fire; Supervisory

5:37 p.m.: F1 was advised of an accidental or defective supervisory alarm went off at the Integrated Science Building on North Pleasant Street. F1 reset the alarm.

Traffic Stop

7:45 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for a failure to clear the snow on the vehicle and driving with headphones in on Commonwealth Avenue.

9:43 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning on Massachusetts Avenue for a failure to remove snow from the windows of the vehicle. The operator will be removing all snow before moving the vehicle.

11:58 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for a failure to stop or yield on Kennedy Road.

Disabled Motor Vehicle

 10:23 p.m.: The physical plant was called in for a disabled vehicle in the intersection of Commonwealth Avenue and Campus Center Way. The operator stated they are waiting to pick someone up and were moved along.

Suspicious Vehicle

11:39 p.m.: An officer stated there was damage to a vehicle in Lot 12 (west of Lot 25) on Forestry Way. The damage was in the rear end of the vehicle and appears to have happened before the snow.

Saturday, Dec 7, 2019

Traffic Stop

12:04 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for defective equipment on Washington Road.

12:08 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for operating without headlights on the intersection of North Pleasant Street and Thatcher Road. The passengers of the vehicle were issued verbal warnings for not wearing seatbelts.

12:21 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for operating without headlights and a registration decal. Violation on Massachusetts Avenue.

12:39 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for operating without headlights on Presidents Drive.

1:06 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for a failure to display a license plate or vehicle registration in Lot 50C on Kennedy Road.

1:28 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for carrying an unsecured load on Lot 21 Access Road.

1:47 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for a failure to stop or yield on Kennedy Road.

1:54 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for a defective headlight on Commonwealth Avenue.

9:00 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for operating with ice on the windshield on Eastman Lane.

12:17 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for an inspection violation on Tobin Road.

12:23 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was stopped on Hicks Way when an officer’s view of the vehicle’s inspection sticker was obstructed, and the officer read the sticker in error. The sticker was observed to be valid, and the stop was terminated immediately without further inquiry.

12:34 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for snow on the vehicle at lower Massachusetts Avenue.

2:05 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for snow on the vehicle on Commonwealth Avenue.

4:47 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for operating without headlights on Massachusetts Avenue.

5:25 p.m. The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for operating with a suspended license at the CHC on Commonwealth Avenue. An officer stated the party had his RMV paperwork in his email stating that he paid his fines. The officer advised the party to go to the RMV on Monday.

7:32 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for operating without headlights on University Drive.

8:51 p.m.: A traffic warning was issued to the operator of a vehicle on Governors Drive and Commonwealth Avenue.

9:38 p.m.: The Amherst Police Department were advised of a traffic citation to the operator of a vehicle North Pleasant Street.

11:25 p.m.: A verbal warning was issued to the operator of a vehicle on Eastman Lane for failure to remove snow.

11:43 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for going the wrong way in a one way on Lot 34 E (south of Massachusetts Avenue).

11:59 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for having excess snow on their vehicle. The party removed what she could while on Infirmary Way and parked for the night.

Suspicious Vehicle

12:49 a.m.: A suspicious vehicle was investigated in Lot 43A (north of Totman Gymnasium) on Eastman Lane.

 911 Hang-up

2:22 a.m.: A 911 call was made outside Patterson Hall on Sunset Avenue. Nothing was heard in the background.

Alarm-Prefire

3:04 a.m.: F1 was notified of an accidental or defective alarm at the Linden House of the Commonwealth Honors College on Commonwealth Avenue.

7:52 a.m.: F1 was notified an accidental or defective pre-alarm that went off at Prince Hall on Sunset Avenue. F1 stated the alarm will remain in pre-alarm and technicians were notified.

Traffic Enforcement 

5:50 a.m.: Traffic enforcement was conducted on University Drive.

8:07 p.m.: Traffic enforcement was conducted on University Drive. The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for a stop sign violation. The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for a failure to stop or yield and operating without a registration.

Assist Agency

6:40 a.m.: A plow was blocking a lane of traffic at the Life Sciences Laboratory on Thatcher Road. An officer stood by until the fleet could move the plow.

5:41 p.m.: Officers were present for the UMass hockey game vs. Maine at the Mullins Center on Commonwealth Avenue. An officer was out with parties involved in a fight.

Accident Property Damage

10:25 a.m.: A reporting party stated a customer advised their vehicle was damaged by another vehicle at the Campus Center Parking Garage on Campus Center Way. The vehicle was parked at 12 p.m. on Friday, and the owner returned at 10 a.m. on Saturday. There was damage on the driver-side front door.

Assist Citizen

 4:46 p.m.: A party was inquiring about a trespass notice that was issued at his hometown two years ago. The party was advised to contact that police department for the expiration date. 

Disturbance

10:03 p.m.: Two parties were involved in a fight near the Mullins Center on Commonwealth Avenue. An incident report was completed.

 Alarm-Fire Trouble

1:18 p.m.: EHS was notified of an accidental or defective fire alarm that went off at the Isenberg School of Management on Presidents Drive. Technicians were called in.

4:55 p.m.: F1 was notified of an accidental or defective alarm at Crabtree Hall on Eastman Lane. F1 stated the alarm will remain.

10:22 p.m.: F1 was notified of an accidental/defective alarm in the Central Heating Plant on Mullins Way.

Intoxicated Person

12:40 a.m.: An intoxicated person was at Coolidge Hall on Massachusetts Avenue was placed into protective custody.

12:57 a.m.: A party was almost struck by a vehicle on the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Fearing Street. The party checked ok.

2:42 a.m.: An intoxicated person outside Brooks Hall was placed in protective custody outside Infirmary Way.

11:06 p.m.: An intoxicated person was placed into protective custody.

11:32 p.m.: An intoxicated person was placed into protective custody.

Suspicious Person/Activity

11:21 p.m.: An individual was sitting on the ground outside of Mahar Auditorium on Presidents Drive. They checked “ok.”

1:12 a.m.: A party was issued a verbal warning for urinating in the snow outside Mahar Auditorium on Presidents Drive.

Parking Complaint 

12:35 a.m.: Parking tickets were issued to vehicles in Southwest Circle.

5:22 p.m.: Parking tickets were issued to vehicles parked in Residential Life spots in Lot 63 on Thatcher Road.

7:06 p.m.: A parking ticket was issued to a vehicle in Lot 25 North on Commonwealth Avenue.

11:59 p.m.: A parking ticket was issued to a vehicle at the Franklin Dining Common loading dock on Stockbridge Road.

Sunday, Dec 8, 2019 

Traffic Stop

12:08 a.m.: A verbal warning was issued to the operator of a vehicle on Massachusetts Avenue.

12:24 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle on Sunset Avenue was issued a verbal warning driving without headlights.

12:31 a.m.: A verbal warning was issued to the operator of a vehicle on Massachusetts Avenue for an unsecured load. The operator parked in Lot 32W (south of Massachusetts Avenue) for the night.

12:32 a.m.: A verbal warning was issued to the operator of a vehicle on Massachusetts Avenue.

1:57 a.m.: A summons for arrest was issued.

9:05 p.m. A verbal warning was issued to the operator of a vehicle on Massachusetts Avenue for a one-way violation.

11:50 p.m.: A verbal warning was issued to the operator of a vehicle near Lot 49 C (across from Dickinson Hall) on Orchard Hill Drive for not having their headlights on.

Intoxicated Person

12:39 a.m.: APD were advised of an intoxicated female at Phi Sigma Kappa. The party checked “ok” and did not meet the protective custody criteria.

12:43 a.m.: A resident assistant states there was a male party in a floor hallway that was unable to walk on his own, had slurred speech and did not seem coherent. The party seemed intoxicated but did not meet the protective custody criteria.

2:45 a.m.: A resident assistant states an intoxicated female party microwaved another person’s AirPods and has no memory of doing so. The RA states she may have touched the melted material but does not need medical attention at this time. F1 was notified and arrived on the scene. The microwave was removed from the room and it was declared safe to be occupied. No charges were pressed.

2:46 a.m.: A resident assistant called in about a female party in the women’s bathroom on the first floor that is vomiting, unable to stand and was conscious, but not very alert. The party did not meet the protective custody criteria.

2:55 a.m.: An intoxicated person was removed to the hospital.

2:56 a.m.: An intoxicated male party in the lobby of a dorm building was called in. He was conscious and semi-alert but did not meet the protective custody requirement. The party was transported to Sylvan Residential Area.

Suspicious Vehicle

12:47 a.m.: An officer spoke with parties outside of the Alumni Stadium Facilities Building on Facilities Building Road.

Suspicious Person/Activity

1:09 a.m.: The party near Lot 32 E (south of Massachusetts Avenue) checks ok.

11:39 p.m.: A small amount of marijuana was seized for destruction outside of the Observatory building on Observatory Road. The party was sent on his way.

Liquor Law Violations

1:14 a.m.: A male 18-years-old or older was arrested.

Noise Complaint

2:12 a.m.: A residence director called in and stated loud music on her floor inside of her building on Eastman Lane. Police were requested to come and check the area. An officer states he spoke with the reporting party and heard no noise at the time.

Assist Citizen

2:28 a.m.: A reporting party states she is allergic to the cold and didn’t have her EpiPen. She requested a ride from the John W. Olver Design Building to North Apartment B. The party was unable to be located and an officer attempted to contact her on the phone. She was able to get a ride from an Uber before arrival and no further assistance was needed.

3:31 a.m.: A resident assistant states a female party came into the lobby of a dorm room on Commonwealth Avenue looking for her building. The party seemed unstable on her feet and highly intoxicated. The party left and headed toward Southwest wearing a large, puffy maroon coat with fur around the hood and had black hair and glasses. An officer looked in the area and saw her headed by Garber Field, Boyden Gym and Tobin Road. They checked in with her and said she was okay and would be making her way back home.

5:05 p.m.: An officer returned belongings to a party in Maple House in the Commonwealth Honors College.

6:31 p.m.: The reporting party states that she has not heard from her daughter in a few days. Her twin sister also states that she has not gotten back to her in two days, which is unusual. Her cell phone will ring, but then go to voicemail. The mother was updated after an officer spoke with the female’s roommate, who stated she had left two to three hours ago.

Alarm – Fire; Supervisory

 4:35 a.m.: F1 was notified of an ongoing issue with the condensation inside the panel of Lincoln Apartment Building 8 on Lincoln Avenue.

Parking Complaint

4:49 a.m.: A reporting party who worked at Berkshire Dining Common called in and two vehicles were parked in the loading dock and needed to be moved. An officer states only one of the vehicles was in violation of the loading area and it had no affiliation to campus. A parking citation was issued and Ernie’s towed the vehicle.

Lost/Found Property

6:34 a.m.: A U-Card was located by a cadet in the lobby of Washington Hall on Fearing Street. The cadet attempted to contact the party via telephone, however, no contact was made. An email was sent and the property was placed in an evidence locker.

11:00 a.m.: A reporting party states there is a backpack that has been left in the entryway of University Health Services for 24 hours. The item was brought to the station.

9:58 p.m.: An ID was found in Prince Hall in Southwest. The party was not a student, but the item was brought to the UMPD station.

9:58 p.m.: A credit card was found in Thoreau Hall in Southwest. The item was brought to the UMPD station.

Alarm – Fire Trouble

4:07 p.m.: F1 was notified of an accidental/defective alarm in North Village on North Pleasant Street.

4:35 p.m.: F1 was notified and reset an alarm in the Mullins Center on Commonwealth Avenue.

Accident – Leaving the Scene

4:41 p.m.: The reporting party states that his car was hit, possibly by a plow, while parked in Lot 32 on Massachusetts Avenue last Wednesday. Damage was done to a mirror and the fender and was recorded in an incident report.

Traffic Enforcement

6:08 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was stopped on Massachusetts Avenue by the ROTC and was issued a verbal warning for a defective brake light.

7:58 pm.: The operator of a vehicle on University Drive was issued a verbal warning for a defective headlight.

Alarm – (Prefire)

8:36 p.m.: F1 was notified and reset an accidental/defective alarm in Gorman Hall in the Central Residential Area.
