46-YEARS AFTER AN EQUAL RIGHTS AMENDMENT TO THE U-S CONSTITUTION FELL SHORT OF RATIFICATION.... SOME LAWMAKERS IN AUGUSTA ARE RESURRECTING THE IDEA FOR MAINE. TODAY, SPONSORS INTRODUCED A PROPOSED AMENDMENT TO THE áSTATEá CONSTITUTION THAT WOULD, PROHIBIT DISCRIMINATION ON THE BASIS OF GENDER. THEY WANT MAINE VOTERS TO APPROVE THE AMENDMENT BY REFERENDUM. ADVOCATES POINT OUT -- 25 OTHER STATE CONSTITUTIONS PROVIDE GUARANTEES OF EQUAL RIGHTS. AND THERE'S ALSO THE ISSUE OF PAY... "ADDING THIS LANGUAGE WOULD REQUIRE STATES TO INTERVENE IN CASES OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND SEXUAL HARASSMENT, IT WOULD PROTECT AGAINST PREGNANCY AND MOTHERHOOD DISCRIMINATION, AND IT WOULD FEDERALLY GUARANTEE EQUAL PAY.
