University of Wisconsin-Madison Chancellor Rebecca Blank sent a letter to Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos on Thursday defending legal protections for members of the transgender community in relation to potential educational policy change.

Blank signed the letter along with Rutgers President Robert L. Barchi and Princeton University President Christopher L. Eisgruber.

Blank tweeted from her Twitter account Friday afternoon:

"At UW, we've been steadfast in our efforts to ensure campus is welcoming and supportive for all students. I’ve joined with the leaders of Princeton and Rutgers to call for our nation to support our transgender communities."

The letter refers to comments made by President Donald Trump defining sex to be determined as male or female at birth.

The three said the Department of Education is responsible for maintaining transgender protections, including an interpretation of Title IX "that fully protects the rights of transgender people."
