The former reality show star suffered a huge loss in the Hawkeye State's Republican caucuses on Feb. 1, 2016, finishing second to Sen. Ted Cruz and nearly finishing third behind Marco Rubio. While polls just several weeks ago showed Trump with a 11-point lead in Iowa, Ted took the win. "Dead clown walking," the headline of the Daily News read on Feb. 2, 2016, with the subtext "Trump loses Iowa to Cruz, nearly slips to 3rd," and "Sounds like beaten man in morose concession."

Her stature secure as the first woman nominated for President by a major U.S. political party, Hillary Clinton departed from the Democratic Convention to face a rival who wears his personal disqualifications as badges of honor.

She goes forth having shown that she is fully aware of why Republican Donald Trump’s candidacy has thus far been impervious to outrages and displays of ignorance and instability that would long ago have sunk any other politician in memory.

Trump has lied, bullied, insulted, divided and shrugged off a career’s worth of stepping on others because he has tapped into anger at being economically left behind, socially denigrated or politically forgotten among a broad swath of the electorate.

She also goes forth having conclusively demonstrated that she is far and away the choice for the presidency of the United States in 2016. With Trump representing a clear and present danger to the republic, waiting until November would be irresponsible: The Daily News endorses Clinton now.

Clinton has but 100 days to convince the country that she genuinely and passionately knows that it’s still the economy, stupid, and that she has the dynamism to rev up growth and drive up wages.

In an impassioned address, she got off to a great start, telling the convention with dead-on accuracy:

“My primary mission as President will be to create more opportunity and more good jobs with rising wages right here in the United States. From my first day in office to my last.”

For good measure, Clinton emphasized: “Especially in places that for too long have been left out and left behind.”

Heaven help America were, unthinkably, Clinton to fail. She is all that stands between the United States of America and never-before-seen proof that the Founding Fathers weren’t all that they’ve been cracked up to be.

Donald Trump has lied, bullied, insulted, divided and shrugged off a career’s worth of stepping on others.

After a convention tilted too far in the direction of sunniness — perhaps to avoid diminishing President Obama’s record, perhaps to draw an unnecessarily stark contrast with Trump’s dark vision — Clinton began to connect with the stunning 69% of Americans who tell pollsters the nation is on the wrong track.

Despite a long run of private sector job creation, too many workers are trapped in jobs with flat or falling wages.

Despite there being more job openings today than at any point since the federal government started keeping data in 2000, the labor-force participation rate is at its lowest level in four decades.

Despite the Democrats’ concentration on income inequality, the rich have continued to do best under Obama.

Hillary Clinton celebrates her Democratic nomination with her husband, former President Bill Clinton; running mate Tim Kaine; and Kaine's wife, Anne Holton.
Hillary Clinton celebrates her Democratic nomination with her husband, former President Bill Clinton; running mate Tim Kaine; and Kaine’s wife, Anne Holton.

Of special importance, Clinton acknowledged that the Democrats had lost touch with the America of hard times.

Reintroducing the former First Lady, New York senator and secretary of state one more time, husband Bill Clinton called her “the best darn changemaker I have ever known.” Then, he went on to depict her moving the ball downfield in three-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust.

Hillary Clinton is all that stands between the United States of America and never-before-seen proof that the Founding Fathers weren't all that they've been cracked up to be.
Hillary Clinton is all that stands between the United States of America and never-before-seen proof that the Founding Fathers weren’t all that they’ve been cracked up to be.

While that’s the reality of how, at best, business is done in Washington, as well as the reality of how Clinton got things done on a bipartisan basis in the Senate, reality bites in this election thanks to the TV star whose fans cheer as he wildly vows, for example, to drive down crime starting on his very first day in office.

Clinton would surely lead a vigorous, activist presidency, including a bipartisan drive to “pass the biggest investment in new, good-paying jobs since World War II.” At the same time and crucially, she is more muscular on the international stage than much of the party would like.

It took steel for Clinton to unequivocally advise Obama to greenlight the high-risk mission that killed Osama Bin Laden while Trump offers the brass of pretending that his every wish will be the world’s command.

As a result, in a tableau of military support that was extraordinary for a Democratic convention, Ret. Marine General John Allen, who led troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, stood with fellow former generals to powerfully endorse Clinton.

Having devastatingly skewered Trump for demagogically saying of America, “I alone can fix it,” Clinton should continue to accentuate her remarkable positives. Highlighting Trump’s negatives, including his expedient flip-flopping, such as once declaring that wages are too high and now backing a hike in the federal minimum wage, should be easy sport.

No one has been more devastating to Trump than Khizr Khan, Muslim father of Army Capt. Humayun Khan, who died a hero in Iraq at the age of 27. Offering Trump a copy of the U.S. Constitution on the convention stage, Khan said, “Donald Trump, you have sacrificed nothing.”

As the convention closed, a fired-up Clinton was well poised to inspire the uninspired, to build a governing mandate for the economic revival that America so desperately awaits and to calm the furies that plague the nation.
