US Senate Committee asks Michael Flynn's son for documents and testimony after he refused to be interviewed as part of the panel's Russia investigation

  • Michael Flynn Jr, 34, reportedly hasn't responded to the committee's request
  • Flynn Jr worked closely with his father and accompanied him on many trips, including one to Moscow in 2015
  • Flynn was fired 24 days into his role as Donald Trump's national security adviser
  • He misled Vice President Mike Pence about his contacts with Russian officials
  • Officials say the younger Flynn could be subpoenaed but he might invoke the Fifth Amendment

The US Senate Intelligence Committee has requested documents and testimony from the son of President Donald Trump's former national security adviser after he declined to be interviewed by the committee as part of its Russia probe.

Michael Flynn Jr, the son of Michael Flynn, has allegedly not responded to the panel, which is investigating possible Russian meddling in the 2016 US election.

Flynn Jr worked closely with his father, a former US Army general who was fired by Trump just 24 days after he started his White House job in February after he misled Vice President Mike Pence about his contacts with Russian officials.

Flynn Jr also worked during the presidential transition until he was forced out of the Trump transition team when he promoted the 'Pizzagate' conspiracy theory on Twitter.

Russia has repeatedly denied the conclusions of US intelligence agencies that Moscow interfered in the presidential campaign to help Republican Trump by hacking Democratic Party emails and spreading propaganda online.

Barry Coburn, a lawyer for the younger Flynn, 34, declined to comment on the Senate committee's request, which was reported earlier by NBC News

The panel could issue a subpoena to the Flynn Jr, although he could invoke his Fifth Amendment constitutional protection against self-incrimination and not comply.

NBC News also reported last month that the younger Flynn is a subject of the criminal and counterintelligence investigation being conducted by Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

The elder Flynn, 58 (pictured, January 2017), has also been asked by the panel to provide information and to testify. A source close to Flynn said that he had turned over documents to intelligence committees in both the Senate and US House of Representatives

The source familiar with the congressional investigation said that the Senate committee is not satisfied and wants to obtain more evidence from him.

The committee is also investigating whether there was any collusion between then-candidate Trump and Moscow officials. Trump has denied any collusion by his associates, calling it 'fake news'.
