/ -- Two years ago St. Joseph by-the-Sea High School built and launched its Institute for Scientific Research
(ISR) on its campus. Headed by three Ph.D’s, the program involves more than 45 students and has recently uncovered research which directly correlates lead exposure to negative neural development.
“We’re excited to present these findings at the upcoming conference,” said Dr. Sara Guariglia Ph.D, who is not only the head of the Institute for Scientific Research at Sea but also former research Scientist at Columbia University, and current Vice Principal of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at Sea. “Opportunities like this typically aren’t available until a student reaches the college level. However, our students have been able to make discoveries that we hope will help to benefit the scientific community at large.”
In addition to these findings being published in the Abstracts of the Society for Neuroscience, Sea students are also the only the high school students in the country to have been invited to present their findings at the Society’s Annual Conference in Washington, DC from November 13th-15th.

, Principal of St. Joseph by-the-Sea High School. “We’re extremely proud of Dr. Guariglia and the ISR Program and cannot wait for our students to present their findings later this month.”
Last year, St. Joseph by-the-Sea was the only Catholic High School invited to present its findings at the Intel New York City Science and Engineering Fair. Building upon that research, current students have been able to document the effects of environmental toxins, specifically lead, and prove that exposure is directly correlated to adverse brain development. Studies were conducted in a controlled environment using zebra fish. To date, 13 Sea students have had their findings published.
“Sea gives us the opportunity to conduct this type of research right here on campus,” said John Buscini, Sea Senior and ISR student. “This experience is something that’s typically only available at the college level.”
