January 26, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ A year after slaying the soda tax dragon, the beverage industry and food retailers prepare for another face-off in NY Gov. David Patterson's attempt to levy a tax on sugary beverages.
The idea of a one-cent-per-ounce tax in New York State was shot down last year, but as budgets tighten - especially in regards to health care expenditures - Patterson has again proposed a tax that would be levied on full-calorie sodas. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg also supports the proposal, which he calls "far-sighted."
The fear for soft-drink manufacturers, which are lobbying hard against the measure, isn't that the price of their products increase in New York, it's that other states will decide to follow suit.
