GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Hunters and gun buyers are getting a major break on purchases this weekend. The state's second amendment sales tax holiday is now in full swing.

Friday was anything but business as usual at Dad's Super Pawn on Highway 49 in Gulfport. Hunters and gun enthusiasts are taking advantage of Mississippi's second amendment sales tax holiday.

"It's a great deal for the sportsmen in our state. It allows them to get some great savings and kick off our sports season. We have all the sports starting right now. Dove season kicks off soon. It's a great thing for all the sportsmen," said owner Kevin Riley.

The Mississippi legislature created the tax free holiday in 2014. The 7-percent state sales tax is waived on the sale of firearms, ammunition and certain hunting supplies. Hunting supplies are items such as hunting/archery equipment, firearm/archery cases, firearm/archery accessories, hearing protection, holsters, belts and slings.

If you do the math you can understand why traffic is heavy over the second amendment holiday. Saving 7-percent translates to a $70 savings on a $1,000 sale. Consumers in the market for a firearm, ammo or hunting equipment wait for this weekend to shop and buy.

"Save a little money. Why not? If you're shopping for a gun, you know this is coming up, why not buy it now?" gun buyer Mark Ost said

Gun stores, pawn shops, and sporting goods stores are expecting to do booming business over the holiday weekend.

"It gets bigger and bigger every year. Right now, we're selling a firearm about every 1.2 minutes," according to Riley.

The holiday runs until Sunday at midnight.
