Fox News apologizes for mixing up Aretha Franklin and Patti LaBelle

Fox News has apologized for a memorial video that mixed up late soul singer Aretha Franklin with Patti LaBelle.

Fox News has apologized for including an image of Patti LaBelle in a tribute to late soul singer Aretha Franklin.

On Thursday, the network aired a video tribute to Franklin who died Aug. 16 at age 76. At around the 3:30 mark of the video, an image of a woman singing is shown along with the text 1942-2018. The photo isn't Franklin, however - it's singer Patti LaBelle.

The photo is from LaBelle's 2014 performance of "Over the Rainbow" for former President Barack Obama, Variety reported.

Jessica Santostefano, Fox News' vice president, media desk, later issued an apology.

"We sincerely apologize to Aretha Franklin's family and friends," she said. "Our intention was to honor the icon using a secondary image of her performing with Patti LaBelle in the full screen graphic, but the image of Ms. Franklin was obscured in that process, which we deeply regret."

LaBelle, 74, tweeted her own memorial to the woman she called "my sister in song."
