Jason Spencer: Georgia lawmaker revealed after appearance on Sacha Baron Cohen's Who is America?

  • Jason Spencer, who used a racial slur on Who is America? will resign on July 31
  • House Speaker David Ralston called for the resignation after n-word was used
  • Sacha Baron Cohen told Spencer that the slur would attract attention to attacks

Jason Spencer, the Georgia lawmaker who used a racial slur on Sacha Baron Cohen’s show Who is America? has announced his resignation and will step down at the end of the month, according to a spokesman for Georgia House Speaker David Ralston.

In the second episode of the Showtime and Channel Four series, the British actor and comedian poses as an Israeli military expert and encourages Jason Spencer to participate in a number of activities, one of which being the creation of a counter-terrorism video.

After Baron Cohen told Rep. Spencer that using the n-word is a useful tactic for attracting the attention of bystanders to an attack, the Republican dropped his trousers and underwear to expose his backside in an attempt to incite fear within homophobic jihadists.

House Speaker David Ralston called for Jason Spencer’s resignation after the episode was aired and in a statement, the former Representative was forced to apologise after he initially refused to step down. But who is Jason Spencer?

Who is Jason Spencer?

Jason Chauncey Spencer, born November 14, 1974 in Nebraska, graduated with a degree in exercise and sport science from the University of Georgia, after multiple transfers, in 1997. After training as a physician assistant, he received a second degree from South University in Savannah.

Spencer was first elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 2010 after beating Cecily Hill in a primary and went on to be re-elected in 2012, 2014 and 2016. In 2018, he was challenged by newcomer Steven Sainz and lost.

As a Representative, Spencer was involved in a number of controversial policies: he opposed the Affordable Care Act, sought to block the Medicaid expansion and the state of Georgia from establishing an insurance marketplace.

The Republican lawmaker also withdrew proposed legislation to ban women from wearing burqas in public in Georgia and submitted a bill, which would have made an old anti-masking statute originally aimed at the Ku Klux Klan applicable to Muslim women.

The bill required Muslim women to remove veils and burqas when posing for driver’s license photos and would have essentially banned them from wearing the religious garments anywhere in public. In a statement, Spencer said that he would withdraw the bill if political forces were too strong against it.

Jason Spencer, a GOP lawmaker, has also been forced to resign after he dropped his trousers and shouted the N-word during a sketch

‘While this bill does not contain language that specifically targets any group, I am mindful of the perception that it has created. My objective was to address radical elements that could pose a threat to public safety.

‘However, further consideration dictates that other solutions will need to be considered.’ He also went on to deny that the bill seeks to ban all Muslim women from wearing burqas in public and said that it was a public safety issue, because it can obstruct the view for drivers behind the wheel.

In 2017, Spencer told a former member of the Georgia House of Representatives that she would be killed and thrown in a swamp if she supported the removal of Confederate statues.

In response to the former black attorney LaDawn Jones, he wrote: ‘Continue your quixotic journey into South Georgia and it will not be pleasant. The truth. Not a warning. Those folks won’t put up with it like they do in Atlanta. It best you move on.’

He continued to say: ‘I can guarantee you won’t be met with torches but something a lot more definitive. People of South Georgia are people of action, not drama.’

Spencer then said that those in support of removing the statues will ‘go missing in the Okefenokee [swamp]. Too many necks they are red around here. Don’t say I didn’t want you about ‘em’.

Jason Spencer on Who is America?

After being coaxed by Sacha Baron Cohen, Jason Spencer was slammed after taking off his trousers and repeatedly using the n-word on a episode of Who is America? and has now announced his resignation.

According to a letter, the Georgia lawmaker submitted to the House Speaker David Ralston, his resignation will take effect from July 31, as reported on CNN after he appeared on the new show alongside the British actor, who was playing an Israeli anti-terrorist expert called Colonel Erran Moran.

The scene started off with Baron Cohen questioning Spencer about the burqa ban to which he replied: ‘I don’t call it a burqa ban, I call it an anti-masking statute.’ The Republican then engaged in a series of alleged anti-terrorism exercises, one of which was supposedly a way of attracting attention during an ISIS kidnapping attempt.

Baron Cohen said: ‘In America there is one forbidden word. It is the “n-word”,’ and after Spencer yelled the slur, the actor responded asking the lawmaker if he was ‘crazy? The “n-word” is noonie! Not this word. This word is disgusting.”

Following this, Sacha Baron Cohen also got Spencer to imitate an Asian accent after asking him to pretend he was a tourist trying to take a photo under a person’s burqa and went on to drop his trousers ‘to use your buttocks to intimidate ISIS’.

After removing his trousers, he runs backwards to ram his buttocks into Baron Cohen’s groin shouting ‘Murica’ and after the comedian says, ‘If you want to win, you have to show some skin,’ Spencer takes off his boxer briefs. ‘I will touch you. I will touch you with my buttocks, USA,’ Spencer yelled.

He returns for another segment where he is filmed sending a warning message to terrorists. 'All you sand n****** over the Middle East, we are tired of you coming to America and we are tired of you threatening us. We will cut off your dick,' states Spencer, waving around a dummy penis with a piece of cured meat.

'You understand, we will cut off your dick and we will shove it in your mouth, chew it off, put it in your mouth. How are you going to rape little children and women without a d***?'

After the episode was aired, David Ralston stated that Jason Spencer’s actions were ‘reprehensible’ and called for him to resign, saying: ‘Georgia is better than this.’ Georgia Governor Nathan Deal also tweeted about the language used by the lawmaker.

‘The actions and language used by Jason Spencer are appalling and offensive. There is no excuse for this type of behavior, ever, and I am saddened and disgusted by it.’

Spencer spoke to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and said that he only participated in the television show because his fear that he or his family would be attacked was taken advantage of. He also claimed he had received death threats after he proposed the legislation that attempted to ban Muslim women from wearing burqas in public.

JASON SPENCER STATEMENT ON SACHA BARON COHEN SHOW

'The makers of this film fraudulently induced me in participating in bogus self-defense and anti-terrorism training after they learned of the legislation I introduced in November 2016 that provoked death threats against me and my family. They took advantage of my fears that I would be attacked by someone inspired by the vile rhetoric used against me.

'I was told the video was intended to be an educational aid to train elected officials who may be targeted by terrorists. Threats to public officials are real as we have seen with the assassination attempt upon Congressman Steve Scalise’s life, which occurred one month prior to my contact with the film’s makers.

'They exploited my state of mind for profit and notoriety. This media company’s deceptive and fraudulent behavior is exactly why President Donald Trump was elected.

'Furthermore, there are sensitive parts of this training that took place under a kidnapping scenario where I was repeatedly asked to shout provocative language which I requested be removed, but I was not afforded that opportunity to have final approval over footage used that was initially extended to me by the film makers.

'It is clear the makers of this film intended to deceive me in an attempt to undermine the American conservative political movement; therefore, I have sought legal counsel to challenge this illegal and unethical behavior and plan on taking action if and when any of this fraudulently obtained footage of me is used by these Hollywood liberals to line their own pockets.'
