SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA (KPLC) - Many people have thought about getting a concealed carry permit but aren't sure what you have to do to obtain one.

The State of Louisiana requires that you pass a background check, have a valid Louisiana license, submit a fingerprint, and fill out an application.

You must also pass a firearm training course taught by an instructor approved by the Louisiana State Police.

Earl Gothreaux has been teaching concealed carry classes for over thirty years and says he makes sure his students are well equipped after completing the course.

"It's roughly about an eight to nine-hour class and I get people to shoot one hundred rounds of ammo practicing before they qualify with thirty-six rounds," Gothreaux said. "So, it's teaching people how to be safe, safe, safe with their guns, how to point the gun, how to pull the trigger, what to look at on the sights."

There are several places around Southwest Louisiana where you can obtain a permit after just a short class or two.

Some of the businesses offering classes include:

Classes usually cost under one-hundred-fifty dollars.
