RENO, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) — As election season approaches -- you might start to see more political signs popping up on the side of area roadways.
The Nevada Department of Transportation says it is prohibited to put any ads on the sides of highways. Anyone caught putting up signs will be fined $250.
"There are times when these roadside signs can pose a traffic safety danger," said Meg Ragonese from NDOT. "They could become wind-born and interfere with roadway visibility for drivers or even roadway maintenance crews. those types of signs could truly pose a roadway safety hazard."
Ragonese said they have collected between 50 and 100 road signs.
"As the political season heats up we know we will see political signs increase," Ragonese said. "For the safety of drivers and for the safety or our crews we want to remind drivers it is prohibited to put roadway signs up on state highways."
NDOT will hold signs at their offices in Reno and Carson City for 30 days. If no one claims the signs, they will be discarded.
