CNN host Chris Cuomo got testy with Republican Sen. Mike Rounds of South Dakota on “New Day” Monday, after he asked about Florida Gov. Rick Scott’s candidacy for the U.S. Senate.

Scott, a Republican, declared his intention to challenge Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson for his Florida Senate seat. Rounds was throwing Nelson under the bus by showing support for Scott, Cuomo said.

“Governor Scott is running for Senate. Do you endorse his candidacy? Do you think he’d be better than Sen. Nelson?” Cuomo asked.

“Senator Nelson is a friend of mine. He is a hard worker. But at the same time we need votes,” Rounds replied. “I know governor Scott is a great individual. I’ve known him for probably ten years now. We think alike when it comes to health care. I would welcome his inclusion into the race.”

“So you like Bill Nelson. You think he’s working hard, doing a good job but you’ll throw him under the bus just to get your party another vote,” Cuomo said, as he shook his head in disbelief.

“In this particular case I think the people of Florida are going to have a great opportunity to take a look at two different individuals who are both qualified for the job,” Rounds said.

“In this atmosphere of partisan division, to give Nelson that much, that sounds like an unusual compromise,” Cuomo concluded. “So we’ll take it and we’ll end on that.”
