Nevada adds 6,600 jobs in February, biggest increase since September 2016

CARSON CITY — An increase of 6,600 jobs in February 2018 brought employment in the state of Nevada to 1,370,900 during the month, according to the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s February 2018 economic report. Unemployment remained unchanged at 4.9 percent.
“With the upward revision in the total number of jobs added in January to 4,500, our state has gained 11,100 jobs in two months,” Governor Brian Sandoval said. “I am incredibly encouraged by this news, especially because this is the third time in the last 12 months that our state has gained 10,000 or more jobs over a two-month time frame. While I look forward to seeing this continue, we know there is still work to be done to ensure all Nevadans have the opportunity to gain employment.”
DETR’s report also notes that initial unemployment claims activity has leveled off near an annual average of 11,000 claims per month after several years of decline. This is the lowest since October 2006.
“This is a very strong employment report,” David Schmidt, Chief Economist for DETR said. “In addition to February’s job growth, new data through September 2017 included in this report shows we continue to have the fastest private employment growth in the nation and have reached a new peak in full-time employment. Additionally, small business employment in our state increased over the year for the 27th consecutive quarter.”
Additional February 2018 Economic Report Notes:
— Seasonally adjusted employment rose to 1,370,900 and an increase of 42,000 unadjusted jobs (3.2%) over the year.
— February 2018 was the 67th straight month where annual employment growth in Nevada was higher than the U.S., and the 86th straight month of year-over-year growth.
— The two-month gain of 11,100 jobs was the 8th time since 2010 that the two-month gain has been 10,000 jobs or more.
— At 4.9 percent, Nevada’s unemployment rate has remained constant since August of last year.
