Dr. King Would Be Ashamed

Dr. King would have never desecrated the headquarters of SCLC by inviting and serenading President Lyndon Johnson even after he had signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. He was on the side of right without regard to political or economic consequences.

[I Write What I Like] Katie Beatrice Hall became the first Black person from Indiana elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.

In July 1983, she sponsored a bill in Congress to make the birthday of Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. a federal holiday. The bill passed in the House in August and in the Senate in October. President Ronald Reagan signed the legislation in November 1983.

Hall lost the Democratic primary the following year. Usually, a Black incumbent enjoys a lifetime selection to Congress unless your name is Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., Gus Savage or Cynthia McKinney. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 ensures Black presence in politics but militates against Black representation.

The mantra taxation without representation called for settler participation in a political forum. Colonial assemblies had failed to emulate the English Parliament. Before the Civil War, a gag order existed in Congress over the question of slavery. After the Civil War, Black members of Congress have been gagged to prevent Black advocacy.

Today, Black selected officials and leading Blacks spend their careers creating, protecting and fostering the political careers of whites, on MLK Holiday, like Queens District Attorney Richard Brown, New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, Gov. Eliot Spitzer, U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton and U.S Senator Charles Schumer.

None of them have done anything positive for Blacks. Their appearances in Harlem on January 15 will only further white paternalism and condescending benevolence in violation of the Thirteenth Amendment, which prohibits badges of slavery.
This is called plantation politics because it resembles the working of the plantation. Enslaved Africans provided the labor and slave masters enjoyed the profits. There was no quid pro quo and any Black person who forgot his or her place was severely disciplined.

Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. Holiday is the federal version of Slave Day, which is still observed by the Confederate States of America. It glorifies slave masters.

In Athens, GA, the venue of the University of Georgia Law School, Blacks were compelled to behave like slaves on Slave Day. Otherwise, you had to look for employment elsewhere.

No self-respecting Black person nor a Black selected official would invite any white politician to trespass on Black soil after the official white-washing of Timothy Stansbury’s murder and the fifty-shot fusillade in Queens on November 25 killing Sean Bell and critically wounding Trent Benefield and Joseph Guzman.

Unless and until a special prosecutor has been chosen to competently and zealously investigate those crimes against humanity and special grand juries are selected which reflect the demographics of Brooklyn and Queens respectively, white politicians should stay out of Harlem.

Double jeopardy does not apply to grand juries. There is no statute of limitations for murder. Black selected officials are misleading the Black masses to protect Spitzer, who has the authority to appoint special prosecutors for Stansbury and Bell, et al.

Neville Mitchell, attorney for Sean Bell’s family, stated Sunday on WRKS-FM that Brown lives in Connecticut. No one is able to connect the dots. A district attorney, in Queens County, must reside in New York City. Brown is, obviously, in violation of the County Law and the Election Law.

The Sean Bell case is headed down the tubes. Everyone is afraid of Spitzer. Blacks enjoy neither legal nor political representation after my illegal suspension from the practice of law in May 1990. Black lawyers are subject to summary disbarment for effectively engaging in Black advocacy.

Dr. King would have never desecrated the headquarters of SCLC by inviting and serenading President Lyndon Johnson even after he had signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. He was on the side of right without regard to political or economic consequences.

Instead, Dr. King, later, spoke out against Johnson’s Vietnam War and organized the Poor People’s Campaign to demand a redistribution of wealth. He was involved in direct action and he lacked the time to listen to white rhetoric. He would never validate the way leading Blacks are exploiting his holiday.

Dr. King was introduced to Henry Thoreau’s Essay on Civil Disobedience at Morehouse. Thoreau called for moralists to refuse to cooperate with an evil system. This essay also inspired Dr. King, throughout his life, to refrain from any alignment with white politicians.

Rosa Parks embraced Thoreau’s teachings when she refused to give up her bus seat to a white man in Montgomery, AL on December 1, 1955. Thoreau also inspired Muhammad Ali indirectly. He refused to fight a people who had never called him nigger.

My illegal and permanent suspension from the practice of law stands for the proposition that Black lawyers must cooperate with an evil system or be severely disciplined. This ruling is adversely affecting the Sean Bell investigation. Blacks are being denied the right to competent and zealous legal representation.

Victims and witnesses should have only spoken to a grand jury as is allowed by law. Instead, they have submitted themselves to the evil designs of the police and the district attorney’s office. These ex parte investigations have delayed any competent grand jury investigation.

The white elected officials who demand complete obedience to an evil system or else  have been invited to Harlem on January 15 to improve their images at the expense of the Black masses. This is a cruel hoax and the sponsors are being allowed to have their cake and eat it too. Dr. King must be turning over in his grave.

The best way for Blacks to honor Dr. King is to assemble and plan a Black agenda for 2007 including a blueprint to end police terrorism. This will happen on January 13 at City College. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. The conveners are Dr. Leonard Jeffries, Abdulalim, Abdullah Shabazz and Alton Maddox.

The United Nations building sits on First Avenue in Manhattan. Although New York City has an apparent, unwritten rule which limits streets honoring Blacks to Black neighborhoods, First Avenue should be renamed Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. Blvd. It would add extra meaning to the goals of the United Nations Charter. This should happen forthwith.

UAM’s weekly forum will continue on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 at the Elks Plaza, 1068 Fulton Street (nr. Classon Ave.) in Brooklyn. Take the C train to Franklin Avenue. The prized documentary Who Speaks for Birmingham in the 1960s will be shown with commentary by Rev. Herbert Oliver.

I hope you will listen to the Caldwell Chronicle on WBAI-FM (99.5) on Friday, January 12, 2007 at 3:00 p.m. and will attend a dinner-dance fundraiser for the 2007 Freedom Retreat for Boys and Girls on Saturday, January 13 from 9:00 p.m. at the Cotton Club, 656 West 125th Street in Harlem. The Clinton Hill South Improvement Assn. will honor Dr. Martin L. King at its Annual Awards Brunch at 15 James Street (corner of Washington) in Newark on January 15 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

An effort is afoot to stop effective advocacy by Black lawyers. I need your support immediately to fight off impending disbarment in a protracted struggle. The federal litigation is on appeal. Please send any expression of support to UAM Legal Defense Fund, c/o Alton H. Maddox, Jr., 16 Court Street, Ste. 1901, Brooklyn, NY 11241. The struggle must continue. Asante sana.
