Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia said Ralph Northam’s win in the Virginia governor’s race, combined with the overwhelming success Democrats had in down-ticket races, proves the state has fully transformed from red to blue.

“You have taken one of the reddest states in the country and you have turned it into not just a battleground, not just purple - you have turned it into a blue state,” Mr. Kaine told Democratic activists at Northam’s election night party.

Mr. Kaine, who is up for re-election next year, said national Democrats should take note of what has driven the party in statewide races.

“Virginia Democrats know that when we make our campaigns about jobs, schools, health care for all, we win,” Mr. Kaine said. “I think the nation and the national Democrat party can learn an awful lot from us because we have been the biggest political turnaround in this country over the past 25 years.”
