Editorial: USD should erect new flagpole

We’re all lucky to be at college. It’s an opportunity most of the world isn’t afforded.

For most, it can difficult to grasp how fortunate we are and what it takes to have a functioning educational institution.

There’s one group of people we can all thank: veterans. Without our men and women in uniform, it would be difficult to even imagine the possibility of college.

And yet, when looking around campus, USD appears to forget that fact.

USD only has two flags flying on the whole campus: one in front of the Al Neuharth Media Center and one by the DakotaDome. These flags are located on the edges of campus, places that are not always high traffic areas.

Given the importance of our veterans, USD should erect a new flag.

Fortunately, many others have already started this process. Last year, Krisztian Fasi, a third-year psychology major and student veteran, began the process to erect a new flag.

The process reached a standstill. So Fasi and the Veterans Club started a petition. That was last year. It’s November, and still no flag pole.

Not to suggest that some progress hasn’t been made. The Student Government Association passed a resolution promoting the project. The USD Foundation has also taken initiative, collecting donations to erect a dedication site in conjunction with the proposed flagpole.

The progress is encouraging. However, it shouldn’t be taking this long. Of course, there’s plenty of paper pushing to do, but it’s been a year.

The support of the flagpole is obvious. There’s been a petition and a resolution from SGA – students want this. It’s a wonder that it has taken this long in light of the support.

The university should make a stronger, more concerted effort to complete this project. It should be put close to the top of the agenda for this university. For President James Abbott, it would be a fantastic way to retire by hoisting the new flag for the first time.

USD is already recognized as a good place for veterans to attend school. Military Advanced Education named USD a “top school” for veterans in 2014, and the Military Times named the Beacom School of Business as a “best for vets” in 2014.

These accolades demonstrate our commitment in the classroom. A new flag would demonstrate our commitment in spirit.

We already do great things for our veterans in education. Let’s extend that to our campus. For USD to honor their sacrifice by flying a flag is little to ask.

Erecting a new flagpole, one that is easily visible, would be a great way to do so. The first steps have been taken. Now is the time to push it through to the finish line. All actors involved should do their best to see the project completed.
