EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) - Evansville's NAACP branch is circulating a petition meant to keep students safe while walking to and from school.

Hundreds of students walking to Bosse High School and Washington Middle School have to cross the intersection of Highway 41 and Washington Avenue. The intersection has a traffic signal and crossing guards during the mornings and afternoons.

Reverend Gerald Arnold is the president of Evansville's NAACP branch. He is one of the leaders on this petition. He said he's not sure how many people have signed the petition.

Because Highway 41 is a state highway, any project would lie in the hands of INDOT.

EVSC said it recognized the danger a few weeks ago and offers a bus service to each student west of Highway 41 even if they only live a few blocks from the school.

Arnold said anyone who wants to sign the petition can give him a call.
