Hemp Farming Bill Passes Committee by Unanimous Vote
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 10/19/2017
Members of the State Senate Committee on Agriculture voted unanimously on Wednesday to advance legislation that would legalize industrial hemp farming in Wisconsin.
As part of the measure, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture would create a state registration process for hemp growth as a commodity. The panel's vote means the bill will now advance to the Senate floor for consideration.
Rural lawmakers and farm groups have been pushing the concept of hemp production in recent years, claiming it provides an economic benefit for farmers, while creating new manufacturing and tech opportunities for the state.
Growers with prior drug convictions would not be eligible to obtain a license, according to the bill's sponsors.
Meanwhile, Governor Scott Walker said in a recent interview that he's still weighing the pros-and-cons of the legislation.
