jones huyett Partners (jhP) recently added Kori Reist to the team as message strategist. In her role, she is responsible for writing copy and concepts in the production of advertising.

Previously, she was employed at Allen Press Inc. as a proofreader. She ensured copy adhered to specific style guidelines and customer corrections were made appropriately. As the head trainer for the proofreading department, she was responsible for developing, organizing, and implementing training documentation and processes, along with mentoring more than 20 new hires.

In her role as message strategist, along with having a critical eye, she writes and edits copy, works closely with the creative team, assists with research and contributes to the agency’s presence on social media.

Stormont Vail Health recently announced that Steve Walter H. Waxman, M.D., J.D., FCLM, a urology specialist, has joined its medical team.

He received his Doctorate of Medicine from and completed his residency at the University of Kansas School of Medicine, Kansas City, Kan. He completed a fellowship in female and reconstructive urology at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C., and a fellowship in pediatric urology and urologic oncology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences, Denver Children’s Hospital, Denver, Colo. In addition to his medical career, he also received his Juris Doctorate with Health Law Concentration from Indiana University Law School. He currently serves as a colonel and flight surgeon in the 35th Combat Aviation Brigade with the Missouri Army National Guard.

As a flight surgeon, he spends one weekend a month and two weeks a year making sure pilots and air crew are in good health and fit to fly.

Ogden Publications recently hired Casey Marshall as an online editorial assistant for its digital content team.

She will work across Ogden’s brands, building and maintaining online articles and supporting the company’s video initiatives and digital editions.

She graduated from Roanoke College with a bachelor’s degree in political science.

Recognition

Four attorneys from Joseph, Hollander & Craft LLC were recently honored by Best Lawyers in America® – 2018 Edition.

Christopher M. Joseph was honored in the Criminal Defense: General Practice sector. His practice is concentrated in the areas of fraud, drug crimes, sex crimes and related civil matters, including property and asset forfeiture. His practice also includes complex civil litigation, primarily in federal court.

He is a graduate of Wichita State University and the University of Kansas School of Law, and a Fellow in the Litigation Counsel of America. He is a member of the Kansas, Topeka and Douglas County Bar Associations. He serves on two Kansas Bar Association Committees and chairs the Topeka Bar Association’s Legislative Committee.

M. Kristine Savage was honored in two sectors: Criminal Defense: General Practice and Criminal Defense: White Collar. She has extensive experience in complex federal and state criminal cases, including appeals. Her primary practice focuses on family law, and the Kansas Supreme Court has certified her as a mediator in domestic cases.

Before joining the firm in 1999, she was Chief of the Northeast Kansas Conflicts Office, and served as an assistant appellate defender and public defender in Shawnee County. A graduate of Wichita State University, she earned her Juris Doctor at Washburn University School of Law. She has been an adjunct professor for the law school and has served as Judge Pro Tem in Shawnee County District Court.

Ross A. Hollander was recognized for his expertise in three legal sectors: Employment Law — Management, Labor Law — Management, and Litigation — Labor and Employment.

He is a founding member of the firm and chair of its Civil Litigation and Employment Law Division. He has practiced employment, labor and commercial law for more than 40 years, including litigation in state and federal courts over issues of intellectual property, trade secrets, non-compete and related negative covenants, and claims of discrimination.

He is a past president of the Wichita Bar Association, past president of the Kansas Bar Association’s Employment Law Section, and past president of the Wesley E. Brown Inn of Court. A graduate of Wichita State University, Hollander received his Juris Doctor from the University of Kansas School of Law. He is a member of the Wichita, Kansas and American Bar Associations, Kansas Association of Defense Counsel and Defense Research Institute.

Michelle Moe Witte was recognized for her work in the sector of Employment Law - Individuals. She is a trial lawyer, defending either employers or employees in discrimination cases based on age, gender, race, disability or religion. She represents clients in state and federal courts, and before various administrative agencies.

A graduate of Wichita State University, she earned her Juris Doctor at Washburn University School of Law. She is a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America, treasurer of the Wesley E. Brown Inn of Court, and past member of the Board of Governors of the Wichita Bar Association. For her outstanding service to the Bar, she received the Wichita Bar Association’s 2013 President’s Award.

Dave Mudrick, a Partner in the Topeka law firm Henson, Hutton, Mudrick & Gragson, LLP was selected by his peers for the 24th edition of The Best Lawyers in America© for his work in Employment Law-Management, Labor Law-Management, and Litigation-Labor and Employment. Also, the Best Lawyers organization noted that he has been recognized by his peers as the 2018 Topeka Employment Law-Management Lawyer of the Year.

He is the president of the Employment Law section of the Kansas Bar Association and has been approved as a Civil Mediator by the state.

The Kansas Department of Commerce designates June as Business Appreciation Month, a celebration of Kansas businesses and their contributions to local communities and the state economy. Businesses can be nominated by any individual or organization.

Three Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce member businesses were recognized in the categories of Hospital/Non-Profit, Retail and Service.

Merit Award winners included Pawnee Mental Health in Hospital/Non-Profit, Steve’s Floral in Retail and Howie’s Recycling in Service.

Lyle Peterson, Northeast Region project manager for the Kansas Department of Commerce, presented the awards to the group.

The Kansas Association of Broadcasters (KAB) recently announced winners in its annual awards for broadcasting excellence. Four television stations and three radio stations will receive “Station of the Year” awards during KAB’s Awards Banquet Oct. 16, in Manhattan. Stations of the Year recipients are:

Small market radio — KJIL FM, Meade.

Medium market radio — KSAL AM, Salina.

Large market radio — KMUW FM, Wichita.

Non-metro television — KOOD TV, Bunker Hill.

Medium market television — WIBW TV, Topeka.

Large market television — KAKE TV, Wichita.

Major market television — KCTV TV, Kansas City.

The “Station of the Year” designation is based on points accumulated for winning a first, second or honorable mention in a category. Categories in the competition include commercial production, public service and station promotion announcements; public affairs programming; news and sportscasts; news features; in-depth reporting; play-by-play; DJ personality; editorial/commentary; and website.

Members of the Michigan Association of Broadcasters judged over 800 entries on content, performance and technical production. The KAB is a statewide trade association serving a membership of free-over-the-air radio and television broadcast stations.

Kansas Public Radio (KPR), based at the University of Kansas, earned seven individual awards from the Kansas Association of Broadcasters (KAB) this year. KPR earned honors in the news, commentary, programming and website categories.

The station captured one first place award, three second place awards and three honorable mentions in the statewide contest.

Miscellaneous

Nicholas Wallace, assistant professor of biology at Kansas State University, recently received a $510,231 Career Development Award from the U.S. Department of Defense’s Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs, which support collaborative research to deliver health care solutions for service members, veterans and the public. The grant will help him investigate the role of human papillomavirus, or HPV, in skin cancer.

The grant will allow the hire of two graduate students in his lab, which is part of the Division of Biology in the College of Arts and Sciences. It will also facilitate mentoring for Wallace by Lou Laimins, chair of the department of microbiology-immunology at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and a renowned HPV expert. Chou-Zen Giam, a professor at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, will serve as Wallace’s military advisor for the grant.

The following K-State students are current members of Wallace’s lab: Andrew Kahn, sophomore in microbiology, and Dalton Dacus, doctoral student in microbiology, both from Junction City; Tristan McCallister, junior in biological systems engineering and pre-medicine, Liberal; Jazmine Snow, junior in microbiology and modern languages, Olathe; and Jayden McCall, sophomore in microbiology and pre-veterinary medicine, Valley Center. Monica Gamez serves as a research assistant in the lab.
