Hirono Out of Surgery and “Doing Okay”

US Senator Mazie Hirono is “out of surgery and doing okay” according to a Twitter message issued by staff members this morning.

She was scheduled to undergo surgery to remove her right kidney after she was diagnosed with liver cancer.  Doctors are also scheduled to conduct a non-invasive, outpatient procedure to eradicate a lesion on her rib at a later date.

Sen. Hirono announced her plans yesterday to undergo surgery saying she was diagnosed with cancer after a routine pre-operative physical for her eye surgery last month.  At the time her doctor discovered an abnormality on a chest x-ray, and further tests showed the presence of cancer.

In a press release on Tuesday, Hirono said she anticipates a full recovery and said that “without question,” she plans on running for re-election in 2018.

Staff members set up a large get-well card outside of the senator’s DC office that quotes Hirono as saying, “During my recovery, you can’t make me laugh… or cough.”  Staff members Tweeted a photo of the card and encouraged those in the area to stop by and leave a message.

Hirono served as lieutenant governor of Hawaiʻi in from 1994-2002 and was elected to Congress in 2006, to the second congressional district.  With the retirement of Senator Daniel Akaka, Hirono was elected to the US Senate in 2012, where she continues to serve.
