How much money did Dow CEO Andrew N. Liveris make in 2016?

MIDLAND, MI -- Nearly $23 million -- that's how much Dow Chemical Co. Chairman and CEO Andrew N. Liveris made in 2016.

That's 610 times "the average rank-and-file worker's pay," according to the AFL-CIO's recent report on CEO pay.

In 2016, CEOs of S&P 500 Index companies received, on average, $13.1 million in total compensation, according to the report, while production and non-supervisory workers earned, on average, $37,632.

The report summarizes Liveris' compensation as follows. The same figures can be found in Dow's 2017 proxy statement:

Salary: $1,930,800

Bonus: $0

Value of stock awards: $9,259,836

Value of option awards: $3,630,035

Non-equity incentive plan compensation: $3,959,974

Charge in pension value and deferred compensation earnings: $3,552,037

All other compensation: $630,377

Total: $22,963,059

A Dow spokesperson was not immediately available for comment.

According to Dow's proxy statement, Liveris is responsible for "executive oversight for the strategic and operational direction of the company. (He) Drives the organization and facilitates decision-making to maximize stockholder returns."

His accomplishments include delivering "strong performance" on several key financial measures and returning nearly $3 billion to stockholders through share repurchases and the highest annual dividend in Dow's history at $1.84 per share.

Liveris will address shareholders during the company's 120th annual meeting Thursday, May 11. The meeting takes place at 10 a.m. at the Midland Center for the Arts, 1801 West St. Andrews, and will also be available via video webcast.
