Morgantown Republican Mac Warner has defeated incumbent Natalie Tennant in the West Virginia secretary of state’s race.

Warner is a retired military attorney, veteran and former U.S. State Department contractor in Afghanistan. On Tuesday night he outlasted Tennant, a Democrat who was seeking her third term.

Warner comes from a prominent Republican family. One brother is former state GOP chairman Kris Warner, another is former gubernatorial candidate Monty Warner, and a third is Kasey Warner, a former U.S. attorney in the state’s southern district.

Tennant had touted her office’s efforts to modernize elections through online voter registration. The former television broadcaster had unsuccessful runs for governor in 2011 and U.S. Senate in 2014.

Warner beat Barry Holstein in the May Republican primary, while Tennant defeated Harrison County Delegate Patsy Trecost.
