Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., revealed in a post on social media Monday she has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
In a message on her Tumblr page, McCaskill said her breast cancer was detected through a regular mammogram
"It's a little scary, but my prognosis is good and I expect a full recovery," McCaskill said. "I will be in St Louis for the next 3 weeks receiving treatment."
The Missouri Senator said she would post on her official Senate website how she would have voted on any matters that come before the Senate during her absence. McCaskill said she would also submit questions in writing for any missed Senate hearings.
In remarks on the Senate floor on Tuesday, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he's hopeful and very confident that McCaskill is going to be just fine.
"Without belaboring the point, breast cancer is personally very devastating; not only to the patient, of course, but the family members who are doing everything they can in a compassionate way to support their loved one," Reid said.
"We know Joe, her husband, is terribly concerned," he added. "But I sent a message to him that the treatment of breast cancer is so much better than it was just a few years ago that we believe that Claire will be okay. And we certainly hope that's the case."
McCaskill, who was re-elected to her second term in 2012, currently serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee, the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, and the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.
