GBI investigating officer-involved shooting in Colbert

One man is in jail and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating after an officer-involved shooting in Madison County Tuesday night.

Around 10:10 p.m., a trooper from the Georgia State Patrol attempted to make a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Tim Carruth, 24, of Colbert, but Carruth fled, according to GBI.

The trooper performed a pursuit intervention technique (PIT) maneuver on Carruth’s vehicle, and the fleeing vehicle became stuck on the side of Ga. 72 near Meadow Lane between Hull and Colbert.

At that point, GBI officials say Carruth got out of the vehicle and began firing at the trooper with a rifle that Madison County Sheriff’s Office referred to as an AK 47 during a manhunt following the incident.

Neither the trooper nor Carruth was injured by gunfire, according to GBI. Carruth then ran into the nearby pasture and woods.

Carruth was located just before 1 a.m. Wednesday with the help of a Georgia Department of Corrections K-9 team and is charged with aggravated assault on a police officer.

Additional charges will be forthcoming during the ongoing investigation, according to the GBI.

In addition to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia State Patrol and GBI, personnel from Oglethorpe County Sheriff’s Office, Clarke County Sheriff’s Office, Athens-Clarke County Police Department, University of Georgia Police Department, Comer Police Department, Danielsville Police Department, Winterville Police Department and Lee Arrendale State Prison K-9 Unit assisted in the manhunt.

This is the ninth officer-involved shooting the GBI is investigating in 2020.
