U.S. Supreme Court sets date to hear Georgia-Florida water wars case

The U.S. Supreme Court has set a 2018 date to hear arguments in the ongoing water war between Georgia and Florida.

According to the court calender, justices are scheduled to hear from both sides on Monday, January, 8.

The so-called war is over water in the river system that includes Lake Lanier.  Florida filed the lawsuit in 2013, claiming Georgia uses too much water from the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin. Georgia has disputed the argument.

The Maine attorney appointed by the high court to oversee the case, gave Georgia a victory earlier this year in his recommendation to the high court.  The two sides had argued the case before special master Ralph Lancaster in 2016.

While the high court can affirm or reject the recommendation, other outcomes are possible, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.  The paper reported that justices can also order Lancaster to re-examine the case.

Congress could also become involved in the decades-old dispute, and more lawsuits are also a possibility, according to the AJC.
